Let's talk about safety....

At BMW, we believe there are two types of safety features in a vehicle: Active and Passive.

Passive Safety in a BMW means the most technologically advanced protection with features such as Adaptive Brake Lights, Advanced Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), Interlocking Door Anchoring to help in side impact collisions and front and rear Head Protection Systems, helping to protect the occupants in the event of a collision.

Active Safety is the ability of the driver to avoid the collision in the first place. This starts with the most basic component in any car-the brakes.

BMW has introduced four new innovative features to improve the active safety of its drivers: all of these are a part of Dynamic Stability Control or DSC.

1) Brake Stand-By-If you suddenly remove your foot from the throttle, DSC anticipates that you are going to want to stop quickly and will pre-tense the brake calipers for faster stops.

2) Brake Drying-When it rains, it takes longer to stop a vehicle. BMW recognized this and incorporated rain sensors into the vehicle. When they sense moisture, DSC will periodically bring the brake pad in contact with the rotor to dry the brake pads. This feature will help stop the car faster.

3) Start-Off Assistant- DSC helps prevent your vehicle from rolling backward or forward when stopped on a hill. The brakes will hold your vehicle momentarily when you release the brake to start moving again.

3) Brake Fade Compensation-As your brakes heat up due to continuous or repeated braking, DSC senses this and compensates by applying the brakes with more force, with the same pedal action.

These features are a part of all 2008 BMW's and each of them was designed to increase the already legendary safety of BMW vehicles.

BMW Builds a Better Cruise Control?

What is Active Cruise Control. Active Cruise Control allows the driver to set a desired speed that is automatically maintained in free flowing traffic. What makes this feature very special is that as the BMW approaches slower traffic, a radar sensor in the vehicle alerts the vehicle. Unlike normal cruise control systems which would then require driver intervention, Active Cruise Control will automatically slow the BMW to match the speed of the slower vehicle in front and remain at a preset distance from the vehicle in front. Once the lane ahead clears, Active Cruise will automatically return the car to the preset speed. This feature is available on all 2008 BMW's. Wish you could see in the dark?

The answer is Night Vision-a revolutionary new technology available on the BMW 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series automobiles. Night Vision uses long distance infrared cameras that allow you to see pedestrians, or in my neck of the woods, deer, lots and lots of deer, up to 1640 feet ahead of the vehicle. If you drive poorly lit roads this feature is invaluable.

It's All About Weight...

Have you ever wondered just what makes a BMW so amazing to drive? I believe most of us have driven a BMW and have not given much thought to how much engineering goes into these vehicles to make them handle so flawlessly. Everything on a BMW is engineered to add to that distinctive feeling. The goal with every BMW is to achieve a perfect 50/50 weight balance front to rear.

Things such as a Magnesium/Aluminum engine block that lower the weight in the front to positioning the battery in the rear of car all add up achieving that goal. Every component is analyzed to determine how it can be improved. Features such as the Carbon Fiber roof on the new M3 help lower the center of gravity and reduce weight.

Why does BMW go to such lengths? Well ask anyone who has driven or who drives a BMW and they will agree-it is worth it!

What an amazing last few weeks at Performance BMW. First we opened our new showroom and service facility in early March, then we received the first of 3 all new M3s. To top it off, the 1 Series rolled in and now we have the X6 coming in a few weeks. What a great time to be with BMW!

For those of you who have not experienced the thrill of the new 1 Series, we highly recommend a test drive. They are truly spectacular vehicles and bring us back to the early days of BMW. This car is nimble, very quick and extremely fun to drive-in essence, pure BMW.
